Beamline 8.3.1 Information
Sample Submission System | ASI PX Policies for Beamline 8.3.1 | Data Collection Schedule Acknowledgment of Data Collection The Alberta Synchrotron Institute is part of a Participating Research Team (PRT), including UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Plexxikon, and MD Anderson Cancer Research Center, with access to beamline 8.3.1 at the Advanced Light Source located inside the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. More information about beamline 8.3.1 can be found on the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology (BCSB) Website. One of our mandates is to provide macromolecular synchrotron beamline access in the time before a similar beamline is available at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) in Saskatoon. During 14 trips to Berkeley between November, 2001 and October, 2003 we have collected more than 120 datasets for numerous researchers working in 10 laboratories from both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. The ASI Protein Crystallography group has covered the expenses for shipping, transportation, and accommodation for those researchers (or their crystals) travelling to Berkeley to participate in data collection. If you have crystals you wish to send for data collection, or if you are interested in assisting in data collection, please contact either Ernst Bergmann or Jonathan Parrish. Please note that on collection trips priorities are assigned to the crystals. While making an effort to match researchers with their own crystals, this is not possible in all cases, so it may be necessary to collect other researcher's crystal data or have your data collected by other researchers. Prorities on data collection trips are assigned based on both user assigned priorities (at the time they provide crystals for shipping) and a variety of other factors, including previous use of beamtimes by a particular researcher or associated laboratory, as well as discussions between crystallography groups at the participating institutions, the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and the University of Lethbridge. It is important to note that currently available beamtime has usually exceeded the required beamtime and no crystals have been delayed by more than one trip. Crystals are shipped in dry liquid nitrogen dewars via FEDEX. These must be shipped at least three working days before the scheduled beam time to allow for delays in shipping or in customs. All relevant documentation can be obtained from our office and from Jane Tanamachi at the ALS. Any researcher in Alberta is eligible to participate in the PRT access. To date, the following labs and collaborators are involved in or have taken advantage of this opportunity:
